1. BAHAMAS, ANDROS
Since men have fished for bonefish, Andros has been a name synonymous with the biggest fish, and South Andros has built a reputation over the years as being the location to try for a 'giant'. Names like Grassy Creek, Deep Creek, Little Creek, the Water Cays and Curley Cut Cays are intrinsically linked to sight fishing for some of the world's largest bonefish.
Ideally situated midway between the South Bite and Curly Cut Cays, Bair's Lodge accesses some of the most remote flats, whilst also providing many sheltered locations irrespective of wind direction.
Since the early 90's Bair's has become highly regarded as providing the best fishing South Andros has to offer. The lodge has also come to represent the bench mark in terms of quality guiding, delicious food, comfortable accommodations and courteous hospitality.
2. CAYO LARGO DEL SUR Cayo Largo del Sur, also known simply as Cayo Largo, is a small resort island belonging to Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea. It is the second-biggest island in Cuba's Canarreos Archipelago. Cayo Largo is a limestone island, formed over millions of years from the remains of marine organisms, such as the ones that build coral reefs. Living coral reefs form one more attraction for tourists on this island, although coral bleaching has stressed some reef communities in the Caribbean. The northern coast of Cayo Largo consists largely of mangroves and salt pans.
While the water south of the island appears clear enough to reveal the underlying ocean floor, the water on the north side of the island is cloudy. This cloudy water indicates that sediment is washing off the land surface and into the water or is being stirred up from the shallow sea floor.
The northern side of Cayo Largo, where the submarine shelf is extended, is the ideal environment for Flyfishing enthusiast's: Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle. & you will be able to see Permits zipping and darting in and around schools of Bonefish. The fishing area of Cayo Largo is a Natural Park of 27.000 square km. Canarreos Archipelago has about 350 islets and cayos and forms marvelous oasis in the Caribbean. The northern side of Cayo Largo, where the submarine shelf is extended, is the ideal environment for the fly fishermen, it measures an average depth of 1,5 meters. The south side of Cayo Largo is protected by the coral barrier and its white beach of fine sands and the flats marks it out as a fantastic place for waders. The wide fishing area is subdivided in 38 micro-areas. The majority of Cayo Largo Flats have firm bottom and provide a good wading, most days you will have the option of either fishing from the skiff or wading. Anglers choose to take advantage of the best time to spot bonefish and permit on the flats, usually from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. earlier and later.
3. CANCUN Located just a 20-minute drive from Cancún, Isla Blanca has access by the sea to a rich fishing area of over 60 square miles. Vast flats, beautiful beaches and paradise islands are home to permit, tarpon, snook and bonefish. This is a quiet area, without any fishing pressure and virgin natural surroundings. Anglers have an excellent chance of getting a super grand slam (Permit, Bonefish and Tarpon or Snook) in a single day or in a few days of fishing. The fishing area covers the south from the flats of Chacmuchuc lagoon reaching the north up to Cayo Ratón, Punta Iglesias and Cabo Catoche (Holbox Island). To the east, up to Contoy Island. Isla Blanca has proved to be the perfect destination for those who want to spend a day or two of fishing while they are on a family vacation in Cancun or for those wishing to fish an easy-to-reach destination with very good fishing and reasonable prices. There are lots of islands, flats, mangrove channels and creeks that hold the most targeted species of the Caribbean all year round.
4. LOS ROQUES Situated approximately 85 miles off the coast of Venezuela and just a 35-minute flight from Caracas, Los Roques is the most important island of the archipelago, center of the public life of local people and visitors. 42 islands and 250 sandbanks, coral reef and calcareous sediments form this amazing place where the colour of the waters, a combination of blue, green and turquoise, will take your breath away. The island is currently populated by about 2,000 inhabitants who live on fishing and tourism.
The village is picturesque with the typical Caribbean atmosphere. Fishermen´s houses, recycled and painted with bright colors, are part of the landscape. The diversity of foreigners and local people gives the island a peculiar touch.
Over 30 years ago, Los Roques was declared a national park in order to protect the wildlife and vegetation in the area. The center of the area consists of a lagoon covering about 400km2 that holds coral islands and numerous "pancake" flats . Los Roques has proved to be a desired destination for scuba-divers and fishermen from all over the world for the richness and variety of the marine live in its waters. The star in Los Roques is the bonefish, found in large quantities and considerable sizes (from 4 to 10 pounds).
It is a world-class destination for bonefishing in its own right. Although Los Roques is considered a mainline bonefish destination, you will encounter other species - tarpon, permit and jacks - as well all year round. From November through February, large tarpon schools ranging from 40 to 150 pounds are seen.
5. ROATAN Both the north and south sides of Roatan island are lined with vast areas of coral flats and transparent, tropical waters. With the possible exception of Belize, there are no other Caribbean destinations where the elusive Permit will provide you with an almost guaranteed daily challenge. And then if you have never cast to a Triggerfish or a Parrotfish, another order of excitement awaits you. These coral-feeding monsters may be as difficult as the permit to lure to your fly, but have the advantage of not moving too far away once spooked.
Fishing in Roatan is fairly tide-dependent. The higher tides attract the Permit to the flats, and Tarpon and Snook to the mangroves and around the dwelling areas. Lower tides allow the Bonefish to feed without fear of predators. Almost all the Bonefishing is done wading the flats. All the fishable flats " some of them less than 2 minutes from the Lodge " will literally be "alive" with tailing Bonefish at some stage during the day.
Bonefish average 4 to 5 lbs, with 8 to 10 pounders commonly available. The resident Tarpon will be found in the 20 to 50 lb range. And Permit average 8 to 12 lbs, but fish up to 30lb have been caught. Given the proximity of the reef on both sides of the island there is a large of variety of alternative fishing available, most particularly, 6 different species of Jacks, Barracuda, Cobia, Snapper, Grouper, Wahoo and a number of other species. Fly Fishing Caribe is proud to be able to assist its clients with every single detail without additional cost, so that they go on a perfect trip, without any “surprises”.
