Expats and diaspora moving to the Caribbean need a specialist provider of global private health and related personal insurances.  One that is designed to provide not just the basic health cover, but also a wide range of other coverage including life insurance, disability and group insurance for overseas businesses.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Expats leaving countries with social medicine are often initially less aware that they need to find health insurance as opposed to those coming from countries such as the USA where a Health Insurance plan is an absolute necessity.  But it does not take long to realise that its not always possible  to get home to the mother country if you are involved in an accident, and that costs, if it involves air ambulance, can be prohibitive. Expats going to Caribbean countries with social medicine or government health plans which many of them do provide, also quickly learn that the standard is not what they are used to back in France or Canada or wherever they once lived.

Ultimately if you live overseas you should seek a good health insurance which gives the very best coverage in the part of the world in which you are now living, as well as the ability to seek specialised help further afield.  There are local/regional health insurance companies as well as global ones specifically planned for expats living outside of their home country.

Medical evacuation is highly recommended for an Expat Health Plan, especially if you are traveling a lot or are living in a third world country.

Most expat health insurances offer the usual major medical plan along with the very important air-ambulance for specialist care on other islands, or even sometimes to Miami.  Outpatient care coverage includes psychiatry, organ transplants, rehabilitation, home nursing, childbirth, home delivery, general practitioner's consultations, eye & ear specialists, other specialists vaccinations, lab tests and analysis, x-rays, scans, EKGs, hearing aids, physiotherapy and even chiropractors..

LIFE INSURANCE

Life insurance overseas will provide coverage to pay your last expenses (funeral & bills), pay off any mortgage or loans and then have some capital left over that your heirs can live on.

There are many types of coverage. Term insurance is the most popular and least expensive over the short term - the premium remains the same for a fixed number of years, increasing with age until it stops at age 60. Some term plans allow you to convert to the more expensive Whole Life and Universal Life plans, which allow you to have coverage for life at an unchanged premium. If the country in which you have moved to is considered 'high risk' or you engage in a risky occupation, your premium will be increased or, worst case scenario, the cost of coverage might become prohibitive. Ensure your insurance is with a reputable company and that you can keep the coverage if you return home.

 DISABILITY INSURANCE

Your ability to earn an income as an expat may well be your most valuable asset. You will need to look carefully and find a plan that works for your income.  Some of the best ones plan can cover up to 75% of your income with benefits starting after three or six months and payable to age 65. Only white-collar occupations are covered. For many expatriates, their employer plans may be their only option. Make sure that your plan covers both accident and sickness.
