| CORPORATE RELOCATION | Press Releases January 12th 2008 First-Ever Caribbean Relocation Conference to Offer U.S. Corps Offshore Alternatives For Immediate Release
Hard-pressed businesses seeking offshore and outsource solutions will find a ready welcome from corporate and government leaders at first-ever Corporate Relocation Conference May 2008, in Honduras.
An increasingly hostile U.S. business environment is forcing small, medium, and large corporations to look at relocating offshore where lower costs, fewer regulations and higher profits are almost a certainty.
In response to this growing trend, the Caribbean Investment Partnership (CIP) has announced “Corporate Relocation Conferences 2008,” a series which will provide insider expertise and insights into the wide variety of relocation options now available in the Caribbean and Latin America. The first Conference will be held in Honduras on the 6th-7th of May 2008, followed by Costa Rica in April.
”Many companies already seeking to relocate their entire business and senior executives, along with their families, are increasingly attracted to the Caribbean islands and the countries of Central America,” explained CIP director Deb Andrews.
“Particularly for small and medium-size companies, red tape, rising taxes, and exorbitant wages have made doing business in North America all but prohibitive. It’s not unusual to see a company realize a multi-fold increase in profits just by moving south. And the purpose of the Conference is to explain why.”
Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia and Panama in particular offer tax free zones, a low cost of living, an enticing climate, an English-speaking, well- educated labor force, low corruption levels and, highly attractive for many, the same time zones as North America. Businesses already in Latin America include Motorola, Procter & Gamble and Western Union.
Amongst the Eastern Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic and Trinidad are actively soliciting new business. And some of the smaller islands of the islands support call centers such as Clear Harbour, which many offshore analysts believe are indicative of the growing trend towards corporate out-migration from North America.
As “Offshore Times” recently reported, “Call centers – the best-tracked segment of the outsourcing industry – have grown an average of 54% a year in the Caribbean since 2002 … And near-sourcing proponents see the offshore movement getting a large boost with the implementation of CAFTA, a landmark trade treaty designed to lift business restrictions among the United States, Central America, and the Dominican Republic.”
But, call centers and high-tech companies are not alone in the move south. As one Maryland furniture maker recently explained, “With the escalating wages, red tape, and onerous regulations here, I simply have to look elsewhere. It’s either that, or shut down completely. Now, I have a choice that isn’t on the other side of the world.”
Caribbean Investment Partnership, a partnership of Caribpro.com and Washington-based Offshore Opportunities Network, has chosen to host the first Corporate Relocation Conference 2008 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The Honduran Investment Law 1992 was legislated to promote and facilitate national and foreign investment in Honduras. Along with some very attractive tax breaks, the package offers a strategic geographic position, the best port facilities in Central America, and a highly trainable labor force.
Since then Honduras has worked hard to position itself as a leading option for corporate relocation and to make the process seamless. Not only for the incoming business, but for the new families moving with the business who will need housing, schooling and support towards cultural and social integration.
CIP partner Carter Clews says, “Near-sourcing in the Caribbean Basin has become a major growth industry. This innovative series of two-day Conferences will give corporation principals a one-on-one opportunity to network with top government officials, civic leaders, and business executives to get in on the ground floor of this growing movement."
