And, a peaceful accord has been reached in resolving the dilemma over former Honduras President Zelaya as the Dominican Republic steps in to help out. ---> read more.

Sustainable Living February 2010The UNEP will lead the massive environmental recovery efforts in Haiti… Small islands have launched an energy initiative, SIDS-DOCK, to help with the reduction of emissions and to pursue low carbon development… and, in news which impacts both the environment and a potential major shift in global oil trade dynamics, the Saudis have quit a long-held lease of Caribbean oil storage and China has stepped in to take it over. In addition, China now has its eyes on the Caribbean fuel oil market as well! ---> read more.

And, Jamaica has been voted ‘Best Caribbean Destination.’ In cruise news, Royal Caribbean faces more scrutiny regarding its cruise ship calls in Haiti but resort workers say that without the business they won’t have money to eat. Did You Know February 2010Most people are totally unaware of Haiti’s remarkable history and the fact that it is the world’s first Black Republic, that this was the only successful slave rebellion in world history, and that Haiti was once the richest colony in the world, with the most productive plantation system in the West Indies. Read about its early history and the revolution which brought about independence over 200 years ago. Also, if you have ever wondered where all the scrumptious French Creole recipes came from, we take a look at the origins of that unique brand of cooking with roots to four continents. ---> read more.

Haiti: Beyond Mountains, More MountainsA Haitian proverb states, “Beyond the mountains, more mountains.” One wonders how many more mountains the poor Haitians must struggle over in order just to live, much less progress. As the Haiti Education Foundation (HEF) approaches the disaster and the role we feel called to play, we first will center our efforts on the people. When HEF began this mission many years ago, the focus was to bring HOPE to the children of Haiti through education. Today, HEF’s resolve is the same. Yes, Beyond the Mountains, there are More Mountains, but we at HEF are willing to climb back on top with our brothers and sisters in Haiti. After all, Frances Landers, its founder, has always said that HEF is God’s mission and we are merely the laborers in His fields. ---> read more.

Pirates: The Original Rock Stars? Part 1 of 2Stirring tales of adventure, romance, and danger seem to surround the facts as well as the legends of the pirates from the Golden Era of Piracy. Movies have perhaps provided a myth made to romanticize these cutthroats as a form of escapism for the viewing audience. Captain Jack Sparrow’s alter ego, Johnny Depp, said he sees, "Pirates as the rock stars of their time." Notably, he based his unique interpretation of Captain Jack on the mannerisms a notorious rock guitarist. While Privateers were lauded as heroes by their host nations, most true pirates were feared as deadly cutthroats, indeed, many of the more notorious pirates would be labeled anti-social psychopaths by today’s standards. Rock stars may be hedonistic and occasionally depraved, but so far none has been labeled as a deadly cutthroat psychopath. ---> read more.

How To Build Back Better in HaitiIn Haiti, Western-style construction standards virtually do not exist, this due primarily to lack of training, especially of the small contractors. The majority of the small contractors do not know why they build the way they do, and the poor people hire the small untrained contractors to build for them as there is always the overall quality/cost dilemma to deal with; the poor must always choose the lower cost, and therefore get dubious quality and materials. Sand and gravel are cheap; cement and steel are expensive. As sad as it is, people saved - because they had no choice, and did not understand the ultimate implications of building without proper knowledge and materials. ---> read more.

Drawn by its natural beauty, the warmth of its people and the financial advantages of living in a true emerging nation full of promise, she made a decision most of us only dream of – she moved to Nicaragua to retire. Losing Your Heart To BelizeAs we all know by now (unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the past few years) the ‘first world’ economy, and with it a chance at a continuing nice quality lifestyle and/or quality retirement, have about vanished. Nothing is affordable anymore. At this rate, you may have to work until age 78 before you can afford to retire somewhere in the good ole USA, Canada or points west. So I’m wondering – was one of your 2010 New Year resolutions to relocate overseas so that you could not only enjoy a quality lifestyle, but save loads of your hard-earned money while doing so. If so – I again tempt you with Belize, a land where it is very easy to lose your heart. ---> read more.

Panama is the ‘it’ place for those who have less of a pioneering spirit, preferring a country offering many of the “known elements” that they are comfortable with back home. ---> read more.

Clews Views February 2010It is impossible to overstate the tragedy that has unfolded in Haiti since the devastating earthquake in mid-January. “Haiti,” popular misconception to the contrary, is not French Creole for “Hell on Earth.” When God created the heavens and the earth, he did not designate Haiti as Dante’s Central Zone. Haiti was once known as the Pearl of the Antilles – and without political interference and a proper plan of action, Haiti can raise like a shining Phoenix from its ruin. ---> read more.
