Letter from the Editor - NovemberLast month, a friend called me about her little island bitch who was about to whelp. Things were not going well with the delivery. We needed some professional help. The vet surgery is a one hour drive away on very difficult roads, twists and turns and full of sudden deep, surprises: pot holes which form in the overnight rains. In Dominica, there are a couple of veterinarians serving a human population of 70,000, most of the population is involved in agricultural farming. ---> read more.

Hot of the Press - NovemberA new National Geographic Sustainable Island report states that -St. John is the best in the Caribbean. Much of its natural environment has been saved by the Park Service and ecologically minded business people. Its long term prospects, especially for the locals, will depend on good sustainable tourism management-. ---> read more.

Fascinating Virgin Islands : Iguanas and a Ceremonial Ball CourtSalt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve
In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on St. Croix, and recently to celebrate the 500th anniversary of that historic event, George Bush signed a bill to establish the 1,000 acre Salt River Bay Preserve. The park features the original Carib village site that Columbus and his men visited, and it is the location of the only ceremonial ball court found in the Lesser Antilles. The park, with its dynamic ecosystem, is also home to the USVIs largest mangrove forest and to many endangered plants and animals. ---> read more.

Eco-Sensitive and Upscale in the USVIAlong with upscale camping, the campground also features fully-equipped efficiency apartments, a pavilion and a communications room with internet. I recommend staying in eco-friendly resorts whenever possible. You may fall in love with this uncommercialized island paradise and want to move there. If thats the case, plan to look at some real estate while you're there. But be prepared, waterfront property is scarce and beachfront is virtually non-existent. Because its a small island, doing your research is fairly easy: lots start at $200,000 and some homes are around $600,000 -you are lucky to find 15 to 20 properties for sale. ---> read more.

Keyhole Bay Pirates of Roatan Competition WinnersA big thank you to all of you who took the time to enter our Pirates of Roatan contest. We were rather overwhelmed by the response, and had not realised that so many of you were planning on visiting Honduras over the next year. By some of the responses we think you had a lot of fun with this! Arlie Thompson, the Governor of the Bay Islands of Honduras, was asked to make the draw out of the many contestants that we had. ---> read more.

Antigua Education : Community Spirit and Small ClassesTheir philosophy emphasizes Learning Through the Arts and puts a very practical and hands-on spin to education. During a history class, for example, the grade 3 and 4 kids use toy soldiers to reconstruct battle scenes thereby reinforcing visually what they learn at their desks. The teaching method for the primary grades can best be described as -home schooling in a school-. ---> read more.

Ecotherapy : Rainforest Relaxation and Holistic HealthRather than doing something we allow ourselves to just be our most natural selves. One participant from my workshop felt that Reconnecting to Nature through these activities stimulates our mental, physical, emotional and psychological aspects of our spirit and serve as a compass to guide our thoughts words and actions day-to-day. Ultimately a deep connection with all aspects of nature can offer enhanced meaning and depth to life and assist us to gain a connection to something much bigger than ourselves. ---> read more.

Guatemala : The Sweet River of Pirates and Ugly MermaidsOver five hundred years have gone by and still, from time to time, someone claims to have found paradise on Earth, quite often close to Columbus alleged Eden...Well we have found it once more, and we claim it is hidden in Guatemalas easternmost state: Izabal. The area is called Rio Dulce and stretches east from Lake Izabal down to the Caribbean Sea, passing by the formerly pirate sieged Spanish fort of San Felipe and the exotic Garifuna Afro-Amerindian town of Livingston. ---> read more.

Water, Water Everywhere Needs a Lot of ManagementThe CWWA conference workshops programmes a number of sessions that deal with various different elements within the whole integrated water resource management and sustainable development categories, from water scarcity to solid waste management to actual projections on climactic change impact. Climactic change and its impact on the water sector are peculiar to the Caribbean. It was felt that the international agencies do not have an appreciation of it. This is due in part to the size of the countries and the size of the communities. ---> read more.
