Letter from the Editor - November Last month, a friend called me about her little island bitch who was about to whelp. Things were not going well with the delivery. We needed some professional help. The vet surgery is a one hour drive away on very difficult roads, twists and turns and full of sudden deep, surprises: pot holes which form in the overnight rains. In Dominica, there are a couple of veterinarians serving a human population of 70,000, most of the population is involved in agricultural farming. ---> read more. |
Hot of the Press - November A new National Geographic Sustainable Island report states that -St. John is the best in the Caribbean. Much of its natural environment has been saved by the Park Service and ecologically minded business people. Quadrille and Carnival : Highdays and Holidays There are special celebrations like French Heritage Week and USVI-Puerto Rico Friendship day. The first in recognition of a large group in St. Thomas population that has ties with the French island of St. Barthelemy and other French islands. The second recognizes a considerable community on St. Croix that has ties to Puerto Rico.The largest celebration is not an observed holiday but it results in holidays none the less. Its Carnival! Fascinating Virgin Islands : Iguanas and a Ceremonial Ball Court Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on St. Croix, and recently to celebrate the 500th anniversary of that historic event, George Bush signed a bill to establish the 1,000 acre Salt River Bay Preserve. The park features the original Carib village site that Columbus and his men visited, and it is the location of the only ceremonial ball court found in the Lesser Antilles. The park, with its dynamic ecosystem, is also home to the USVIs largest mangrove forest and to many endangered plants and animals. ---> read more. |
Eco-Sensitive and Upscale in the USVI Along with upscale camping, the campground also features fully-equipped efficiency apartments, a pavilion and a communications room with internet. I recommend staying in eco-friendly resorts whenever possible.You may fall in love with this uncommercialized island paradise and want to move there. If thats the case, plan to look at some real estate while you're there. But be prepared, waterfront property is scarce and beachfront is virtually non-existent. Water, Water Everywhere Needs a Lot of Management The CWWA conference workshops programmes a number of sessions that deal with various different elements within the whole integrated water resource management and sustainable development categories, from water scarcity to solid waste management to actual projections on climactic change impact. Climactic change and its impact on the water sector are peculiar to the Caribbean. It was felt that the international agencies do not have an appreciation of it. Enabling the Disabled : Above and Below the Caribbean Diving with a disability gives new meaning to visibility and equalizing. The Diveheart Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2001 which provides and supports educational SCUBA diving and snorkeling programs for physically impaired children and adults, is one of the several organizations taking advantage of a more accessible Caribbean. Diveheart has traveled to the Cayman Islands, Cozumel, Utila, Honduras and other Caribbean locations to either train scuba instructors or for recreational trips for people with disabilities. ---> read more. |
Tourism and the Art of Green Maintenance On the other hand, a new global survey by Lonely Planet reveals that travelers are keen to make significant changes to their behavior to travel sustainable. The annual Travellers Pulse survey of August 2007, which polled over 24,500 people worldwide, showed 84% of respondents said they would consider offsetting their emissions in the future. 93% of people said they would or might purposefully partake in environmentally friendly travel in the future. ---> read more. |
