Letter from the Editor - OctoberAmongst the high cascades and impenetrable rainforests of Morne Diablotin, Morne Trois Piton and the Central Forest Reserve they Jacos wing their freedom. Oh yes..and in my garden. In quite large, noisy numbers. Perched high up in the grapefruit trees these mannerless birds hurl abuse at each other across the orchard. They stuff themselves with citrus, stripping the fat juicy grapefruit from its outer skin with their claws and beaks, an inherited skill of millennia. Standing on my verandah at treetop height, I can almost reach out and touch them. ---> read more.

An Englishman's Hideaway - Columbian Island ProvinceSan Andres is not yet frequented by the international tourist fraternity to any extent but is a hugely popular holiday place for mainland Colombians. There is an efficient weekly service by ship from Miami and, from a shopping point of view, San Andres must be as good as any place in the Caribbean – that is, in all aspects other than the rather ordinary supermarkets which suffer notably from a lack of fresh vegetables and other healthy foods. Providence and adjoining Catalina are volcanic islands, smaller and lying about 50 miles to the north of San Andres. ---> read more.

Medellin Hotel Restoration with Picassos and the HomelessHowever, they obviously all thought they were little Picassos since none would lower their price. When I asked them why it was so expensive I got really lame answers such as their signature on the drawings was of great value. So I continued to look for an architect who would give me a realistic quotation. After about three weeks of searching I found a certified architect who was willing to do the job for the equivalence of $200 USD. This also included the sacred signature that the others thought was of almost infinite value. The point here that is important to note is just how much more some of the professionals will try to overcharge a foreigner. ---> read more.

Where to Find a Beautiful Wife and Eternal SpringA famous Colombian saying goes: If you want a pretty mistress, go to Cali, but if you want a beautiful wife, go to Medellin. Medellin, once thought to be the most dangerous city on earth, is undergoing a renaissance and now leads the country in a curious duality, as both the fashion and the internet capital of Colombia! One wonders if the fashion industry grew up as a result of the citys beautiful women. ---> read more.

Venezuelan Vino Novello and Andean PecorinoThis country imports most of what it uses so the cost of imported goods is expensive for locals. For foreigners not at all (I guess we are used to it)! You can buy a car at the price equivalent in Bolivars to the actual official rate, so you gain twice.
The high level of inflation creates a phenomenon that will actually appreciate the value of your used car over the year. Long gone are the days where your car depreciated as soon as you drove it away from the show room! You will also forget worrying about the cost of filling up your car, every time I do it you can catch me with a big smile. I pay $2 to fill up my Camry Toyota….whaooooo!! ---> read more.

Carbon for Water on the Travel Exchange - Climate CaringClimate Care was set up a decade ago to do something about this. Our founder, Mike Mason, saw that the key to greening the global economy was to give carbon emissions a price – polluters have to pay, and reducers get rewarded. This is the principle behind carbon offsetting – buying carbon reductions to compensate for your own unavoidable emissions. You measure your impact on the climate and pay Climate Care to reduce the same amount, through funding green energy projects around the world. Carbon offsetting is not an excuse to keep on polluting, but an essential tool to deal with the carbon you cant avoid, just as recycling deals with unavoidable waste. ---> read more.

Hot off the Press - OctoberIn 2006, The Nevis Cricket Team participated in the inaugural Stanford 20/20 tournament which involved 19 Caribbean teams. Nevis surprised the entire Caribbean by making the semi finals where unfortunately they lost to Trinidad and Tobago. The matches exposed some bright new talent during the tournament. The pace and accuracy of John -the dentist- Maynard astonished us all. Shervin Woodley was brilliant at the top of the order and Tonitto Willet achieved the tournaments highest score of 86 at a phenomenal strike rate far better than a run a ball. Kieran Powell shocked us as he audaciously hooked his first ball out of the ground for 6. ---> read more.
