Hot Off The Press - September In the autumn of 1997, close to the confluence of the Layou and Mathieu rivers, there was a series of dramatic landslides. The two rivers meet in a canyon -like gorge and upstream from this junction, the valley walls of the Mathieu River suddenly collapsed, sliding into the river and down into the gorge where the two rivers meet. A dam was created, plugging the Mathieu River though the Layou continued to flow. Today the Mathieu River is still blocked and a large lake has formed in the river valley behind the landslide dam. Costa Rica Low in Corruption High in Standard A recent study by the Miami Herald rated Costa Rica the 27th safest country for investment of 140 countries surveyed. The limit is difficult to envision because for many years the Costa Rican market did not offer mortgage financing and now with these major financial institutions all competing to lend money in little ole Costa Rica you will see tremendous growth in the housing sector. The Ticos are now being offered financing for cars, homes, etc at affordable rates. An Ounce of Costa Rican Green Prevention President Arias stated that hydrocarbons – including gasoline and diesel – bear a heavy tax burden in Costa Rica, making fuel here more expensive than in any other country in Central America. 3% of these taxes fund Costa Rica's cutting-edge payment for environmental services program, called the National Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), which compensates landowners for growing trees. The program doles out nearly $15 million a year to more than 8,000 property owners. European governments have already put a cap on how much carbon dioxide industries can put into the atmosphere, and they want to tighten that cap even more in the future. ---> read more. |
