Living, Working and Investing in the Caribbean | Grenada’s Newest – Victory Bar & Grill II Opens to the Public St. George’s, Grenada – (Monday, March 26th 2007)
 | Savvy Grenada is pleased to announce the opening of the new The Victory Bar & Grill II at Port Louis Marina in Lagoon Road. After a few weeks of product and service testing the Victory Bar II is now fully operational.
| Grenadian Operations Manager Chris Ghita explains “we would like to thank our loyal patrons for all their suggestions and feedback during our trial period, we hope that the changes implemented and suggestions made will improve the standards and service and we look forward to welcoming back our early guests soon”.
This unique bar with casual barbecue grill, set on the picturesque Port Louis Marina is opened Tuesdays to Sundays from 11am until 11pm. The Victory Bar II provides a spectacularly beautiful setting for that perfectly relaxed lunch time appointment, evening unwind or friendly nighttime gathering.
The Victory Bar & Grill II is the first major development to take place at the Port Louis Marina. It is designed to provide a relaxed, casual service to our Grenadian clientele and the many visitors to our lovely island. The Victory Bar & Grill II will also cater to the many yachts which will visit Port Louis Marina in the coming months.
Marina and Communications Manager Danny Donelan says "The Victory Bar & Grill II will make Grenada stand out among other international and regional ports. The uniquely beautiful setting which this place provides will create vivid memories in the minds of our visitors and they will always remember that lunch or that drink they had in Grenada. We see this not only as a Bar and Grill but as a place where Grenada will be marketed."
The Victory Bar is synonymous throughout the yachting world as it was the unofficial headquarters for Peter de Savary’s Americas Cup challenge based in Newport R.I, U.S.A in 1983, his boat Victory famously sported the bulldog as its logo and its rebirth marks a return to Grenada of the yachting and boating community with the development of Port Louis.

| Hurricanes Hardly Happened Last Year - But What About This Year?
"We foresee an above-average Atlantic basin tropical cyclone season in 2007." says Dr . Gray the well known Colorado forecaster. http://typhoon.atmos.colostate.edu/forecasts/2006/dec2006/
The forecast predicts 14 named storms, 7 of them hurricanes, and 3 of those hurricanes will be 'intense', with 8 intense hurricane days. Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), a consortium of experts on insurance, risk management and seasonal climate forecasting led by the Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre at University College London, says "based on past, current and projected climate signals, tropical cyclone activity is forecast to be about 75% above the 1950-2006 norm in 2007. This is the highest March forecast for activity in any year since TSR forecasts began in 1984."
Two predictors are the forecast July-September 2007 trade wind speed over the Caribbean and tropical North Atlantic, and the forecast August-September 2007 sea surface temperature in the tropical North Atlantic. The former influences cyclonic vorticity (the spinning up of storms) in the main hurricane track region, while the latter provides heat and moisture to power incipient storms in the main track region.
One of the other important questions for the upcoming hurricane season is whether El Nino conditions will continue through the 2007 Atlantic basin hurricane season. Forecasts are that by summer it will die away and therefore not inhibit the spawning of hurricanes.
There were four hurricane seasons since 1949 with similar characteristics to October-November 2006, these were 1952, 1958, 1966, and 2003 all active years.
Although global surface temperatures have increased over the last century and over the last 30 years, there is no reliable data available to indicate increased hurricane frequency or intensity in any of the globe’s seven tropical cyclone basins.
| Caribbean ICT is Fit and Ranking Well in the World Economic Forum's Global Information Technology Report 2006-2007. Geneva, Switzerland -- March 28, 2007
For the first time, Denmark tops the rankings of The Global Information Technology Report 2006-2007’s "Networked Readiness Index", as a culmination of an upward trend since 2003. But the tiny Caribbean countries are also posititioning themselves well on the index. The US ranks 7, the UK 9, and Canada 11. http://www.weforum.org.
The Networked Readiness Index examines the preparedness of countries to use ICT effectively on three dimensions: the general business, regulatory and infrastructure environment for ICT; the readiness of the three key stakeholders þu individuals, businesses and governments þu to use and benefit from ICT; and their actual usage of the latest information and communication technology available.
The highest ranking Caribbean countries are newly included Barbados (40), Jamaica (45), Mexico (49), `and Costa Rica (56). The rankings for the region show an encouraging upward trend, with large countries such as Mexico gaining several positions. The same tendency is even more marked for small Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica (45), Costa Rica (56) and Dominican Republic (66) which realized impressive improvements.
The region’s overall improvement can be traced partly to the results of increased emphasis being laid on ICT strategies in recent policy agendas of most countries in the region to reduce the digital divide and increase competitiveness.
| State of the Art Healthcare Centre Breaks Ground in Trinidad
A Canadian-designed national oncology centre on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, is being built at an estimated cost of $24 million (US) will host a variety of cancer treatment services, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy and four radiation bunkers that will be connected to the main hospital by a two-level covered walkway.
Designed by Toronto’s Farrow Partnership Architects (FPA), the 71,000-square-foot, three-storey centre will function as a regional health resource for the Caribbean. The facility will also be linked with The University of The West Indies for education and training purposes.
Construction managers are EllisDon. The project team includes mechanical/electrical engineering consultants Rybka Smith and Ginsler, structural engineering consultants Halsall and cost consultants Hanscomb Ltd.
FPA said the overall site strategy is designed to stitch the new structure into the existing campus at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences complex.
Given the threat of hurricanes, the building has been wind-tested and designed to withstand heavy winds and rain, said project architect John Kapov.
Toronto’s Comprehensive Care International is the project management firm responsible for development of the centre and the national oncology program in Trinidad and Tobago. | Green Gold Starts to Flow as US Company Plans Ethanol Dehydration Plant in Caribbean
US company Tampa Energy and partners plan to invest $50 million in a new ethanol dehydration plant to be based in the Dominican Republic and to supply the U.S. market. http://www.cattlenetwork.com/content.asp?contentid=114481 In the first two years 2008-09 the plant's processing capacity is expected to be roughly 50 million gallons (190 million liters) per year.
Ethanol exported to the U.S. via Caribbean and Central American countries currently enjoys a tariff-free quota of up to 7% of the U.S. market, under a trade agreement known as the Caribbean Basin Initiative or CBI. Once that quota is exceeded, companies have to pay a hefty 54-cent-per-gallon U.S. ethanol tariff if the ethanol uses imported feedstock.
As U.S. interest in renewable fuels has boomed in the last year and a half, a growing number of companies have eyed the ethanol dehydration sector with newfound interest, including Jamaica's largest commercial poultry producer Jamaica Broilers, with a new 60-million-gallon-per-year plant and EthylChem, which is planning a 100-million-gallon plant on Trinidad and Tobago. Both of the companies' plants are expected to come online in the next few months.
Companies currently exporting ethanol tariff-free to the U.S. via the CBI include U.S. multinational Cargill Inc., London-based trading company ED&F Man, and leading Brazil ethanol exporter Coimex.
Companies such as Coimex, are already looking at investing in local feedstock production in the region, since ethanol sourced from local feedstock have no quota set for tariff-free sales to the U.S.
Tampa Energy and its partners are also looking to build a 130,000 metric ton plant in the Caribbean that will produce gasoline additive ETBE, or ethyl tertiary butyl ether, which uses ethanol as a feedstock, said McDonnell.

| | | "How To Buy Costa Rica Real Estate Without Losing Your Camisa" was written by Scott Oliver with the help of dozens of Costa Rica real estate experts and attorneys. |
This is not a book about living in Costa Rica; it is a 140 page comprehensive English-language guide to buying Costa Rica real estate.
Contrary to what some people may have told you, there is no Multiple Listing Service! Trying to establish the 'value' of real estate is difficult.
Half the population of Costa Rica call themselves 'brokers' because anybody can freely call themselves a real estate 'broker'. They do not need any qualifications, training or experience to try and sell you real estate.
What this means is that when you search for Costa Rica real estate, which may be one of the biggest investments of your life, more than likely, you will listen to expert advice coming from someone with zero qualifications or training in real estate, who is trying very hard to earn a sales commission selling you a property that could be overpriced.
If this sounds like a recipe for disaster to you, it can be! CLICK HERE to find out more.

| Have you ever thought about retiring in Mexico? How about retiring in one of its many lovely retirement havens? Dru Pearson, the author of this report, tells us that there are five major areas where American and Canadian retirees tend to congregate. While there may be a few expatriates scattered in a dozen villages throughout Mexico, most Americans and Canadians settle in one of five locations: San Miguel de Allende, Mazatlan, Oaxaca, Guadalajara, or Lake Chapala. Dru Pearson visited all these areas before settling in Lake Chapala. Dru gives sound and thoughtful advice on retirement in Mexico. Everything from how to pick your location to Mexican paperwork is covered. If you've ever considered retirement in Mexico please read this report first. It has the information that would otherwise take you months of frustration to acquire.
But why Mexico, you might ask? The reason so many Americans and Canadians choose Mexico is because they can drive to Mexico in a car. A bigger reason is that Mexico is a bargain compared to the USA and Canada. But there are also a large number of Europeans in Mexico. Mexico is rich with history, steeped in culture, having perhaps a more pronounced culture than any other nation in latin America with the exception of Brazil and Argentina. Mexico has great food, great architecture and many areas with an excellent climate. Mexico is also modern, with better highways than many parts of latin America and an infrastructure that allows foreigners to connect via telephone and internet to the rest of the world. This level of infrastructure isn't available in Nicaragua, nor in Guatemala, and this is a very important determining factor for the retiree who doesn't want to be inconvenienced by inconveniences.
