Antigua Images - The Beach is Just Beginning by Penny Tyas
“The beach is just the beginning” or so states the new image of the Antigua and Barbuda tourist board www.antigua-barbuda.org . This three island nation boasts 365 beaches, one for every day of the year, but there is more to these Caribbean islands than just that. A previous advertising campaign stated “Tourism is everybody’s business” and the truth in that is evident when you realize just how much of the GDP evolves from it.
For someone contemplating moving to Antigua, perhaps investing or having a second home here, the effect of tourism on the economy is indeed everybody’s business. An increase in the number of visitors to the island directly relates to the amount of revenue the island generates, and we all want to be a part of a flourishing community.
2007 is an unprecedented year for special events, not least of which is the Cricket World Cup. The Super 8 series of matches are to be held in the US$55 million purpose built stadium provided as a gift to Antigua by the Chinese. This sporting event is the largest ever to have been held in the Caribbean, and according to the Prime Minister, the third largest sporting event in the world. Apart from the obvious short term benefit to the island, the legacy benefit is huge – roads have been upgraded both around the facility and in St. John’s, power and lighting have been improved, and some 2000 extra hotel rooms have been built across the island to accommodate the expected increase of visitors for this event alone. The airport is also receiving a necessary facelift and plans for its further development and expansion are ongoing.
Although the island expects to receive somewhere in the region of 20,000 additional visitors for the Cricket World Cup in March and April, there are other notable events throughout the year that will increase International awareness for Antigua and Barbuda.
April 19th sees the start of the 20th anniversary of the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta hosted, as usual, by the Antigua Yacht Club based in English Harbour www.antiguaclassics.com. This is a wonderful week of yacht racing, not of the modern high-speed fiberglass and Kevlar variety, but a more stately parade of sail with some of the most beautiful classic yachts in the world.
On April 29th another anniversary is celebrated when the Antigua Sailing Week www.sailingweek.com reaches its 40th birthday. With around 200 boats competing for a number of prizes including the coveted Lord Nelson Cup, this is a huge event that brings thousands of international visitors to the hubs of activity in English Harbour, Jolly Harbour and Dickenson Bay. Antigua Sailing Week is such a well known and respected event in the sporting calendar that it brings with it fantastic exposure for Antigua from around the world.
At the end of July and the beginning of August, Antigua celebrates with a Carnival, and as this year is the Golden Jubilee, it is expected that the event will be bigger and better than ever. Carnival www.antiguacarnival.com draws Antiguans from around the globe ready to “Jump Up!” for their country. Although the revenues generated from gate tickets is not high in comparison to the other events, the spin off revenues are huge – from car rental to taxi drivers, from restaurants to supermarkets – so there is plenty to share around.
In 2006, nearly 120,000 visitors arrived in Antigua by air between January and May! That’s a lot of visitors for an island that is only 108 square miles, yet it still manages to retain its slow pace of living and secluded, peaceful places. It is not surprising, therefore, that the country attracts so much in the way of investment opportunities - after all, what could be better than doing business in a thriving economy, then coming home to jump in the clear blue waters at a quiet beach and sipping rum punches as the sun goes down!
Penny Tyas arrived in the Caribbean by boat in 1988, having left England to sail around the world. To date Penny has crossed the Atlantic three times, but keeps finding herself back in Antigua, where she now lives with her 7 year-old son.Formerly a charter chef and sailor in the British Virgin Islands, Penny now runs her own business, Paperworks, providing Accounting, Tax advice and Business Services to local business owners including expats and Antiguans alike. She can be contacted at paperwks@candw.ag |
