PANAMA: IT WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU
By Scott P Taylor

Panama is that Central American paradise located between Costa Rica and Columbia. A hot spot for city lovers, sun seekers and Eco-Tourists. It is also growing in popularity as a #1 destin
ation for snowbirds, retirees and Indiana Jones style adventurers, seeking lost cities and uncharted territories.
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
A country of contrasts, Panama offers palm tree lined beaches, indigenous tribes, Rain forests, mangroves and coral reefs, bustling cosmopolitan centers, cool mountains, hot tropics and year round sun. In short, Panama has something for everyone.

Where else on Earth has scenery straight out of Indiana Jones or Romancing the Stone, but with a First World Infrastructure and stable economy based on the US dollar?

YEP, YOU GOT IT – PANAMA… THE NEW CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

What else is Panama?
• Idyllic islands filled with a myriad of wildlife,
• A capital that is a first world city of skyscrapers to rival those of Manhattan,
• Seven groups of indigenous people,
• 29% of its area is National Park,
• Duty free shopping with high end goods, US style malls and US mega-stores as well,
• The friendliest people in Latin America,
• Beaches to die for and spectacular mountain backdrops a
• A country with a low cost of living with virtually non-existent inflation that offers a generous list of incentives to attract foreigners,
Yep, you got it – Panama! The new center of the Universe!

Gone are the days of dictatorship and living under the thumb of General Omar Torrijos. Panama is now a thriving democracy and a hub of tourism and trade.

Panama has always been a destination for those seeking adventure – kayaking, river rafting, deep sea fishing and rainforest trekking – but it is now a top country for tourists, second home owners and retirees. In fact, Panama has been voted the number one best place for retirees by International Living magazine, and the highland village of Boquete was rated the fourth “best retirement place in the world” by AARP's Modern Maturity magazine. Panama is on the up, so make sure you're a part of it!

Panama Living

Panama is not only a Shangri-la of beauty and mind-blowing contrasts, it actually offers many incentives for moving there. US Baby Boomers are realizing that they just won't be able to sustain their standard of living and quality of life, if they continue to live in the US after retirement.

With the current American economic gloom and high cost of living, more and more people are considering relocating to countries where they can enjoy the best years of their lives, and buy the luxuries they deserve.
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
In the past, popular destinations for retirees have been Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize and the Dominican Republic, but here are some great reasons for putting Panama at the top of your retirement destination list:-

1.Panama has less bureaucracy and red tape to deal with than other retirement destinations.

2.Inexpensive real estate – OK, so property prices and rents are on the up, but they're still nothing like most of North America! New build Panama City condos can be purchased for under $275,000 and new 3 bedroom homes in the Jaramillo mountains for under $350,000!

Since 2006, prices per m2 jumped from $1780 to $2890 – an increase of 25%. Property is booming and now is a great time to invest for the future. Buy a property and take advantage of the buoyant rental market and high yields, until you retire to Panama.

3. A low cost of living – Enjoy your usual standard of living and some extra luxuries. Forget frugality and be free!

4.Safety – Low crime rates and good policing differentiate Panama from typical snowbird and retiree destinations like Florida and Mexico.

5. Stability – A stable economy based on the US $, virtually zero inflation and a stable democratic government combine to make Panama an ideal country in which to live.

6.Infrastructure – Panama offers a First World infrastructure with many US companies and brands to be seen on its streets. This, combined with its US$ economy, make it nice and easy for expatriates to settle and handle the transition of moving to a new country.

7.Great amenities – Panama City especially is a major modern metropolis offering all the amenities you would expect in a First World capital.

8.US standard health care – Enjoy the same types of facilities as you would back home. There are many English speaking doctors in Panama, who have actually been trained in the US.

8.Good communications – ADSL Internet is common in most of Panama and the country has a well established and modern telephone system.

9.Canal Expansion - “What does that have to do with me?”, I hear you ask. Plenty! Expansion of the Panama Canal will bring more ships into the country including cruise ships, bringing tourists and money. The more money coming into Panama, the better the economy. The canal expansion is due to be completed by 2014.

10. The Free Trade Zone – Panama's Colón Free Trade Zone is the second largest in the world and receives over quarter of a million visitors a year. This zone, offering exemption from tax on importation and re-exporting, is a vital part of the Panamanian economy.

11.Great climate – A tropical haven without the storms! Panama does not suffer with hurricanes – other countries, like Belize, do. It has hot temperatures all year round and a rainy season from May to November which keeps its scenery lush and green. Sea breezes and the advent of air con in many properties and public buildings make any humidity easy to bear. Mountain living, in places like Boquete, offers eternal springtime with warm temperatures all year round.
12.Panama is The Sovereign Society's top tax haven.

13.Tax breaks and incentives for retirees – The Pensionado Program offers retirees the best incentives in the world. For example, people retiring to Panama can enjoy perks like 50% off entertainment, 25% off airline tickets, 15% off hospital bills and much more... Plus, you don't have to be a certain age to be classed as a “pensionado” - anyone over 18, who has an income of $1000 or more from a pension, can take advantage of these benefits.

14.Tax breaks for foreign residents – No tax to pay on income earned abroad and your financial privacy is guaranteed.

15.Language – Spanish is the main language, but English is widely spoken, making day to day life nice and easy.

16. Location, location, location – Miami is only a two and a half hour flight away from Panama City and Copa Airlines, Panama's main airline, is opening up more direct routes to many US cities. It's easy to visit family and friends. Panama is also sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea making it a veritable Paradise which is unspoiled by mass tourism and overbuilding.

PANAMA TRULY DOES HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER EVERYONE.

Panama Hotspots

Panama truly does have something to offer everyone. If you are a city lover, then you will love living in the capital city, Panama City. Others will enjoy country living in the spectacular scenery of Panama's highlands and lowlands. The main areas for expatriates are as follows:-

Boquete

A hotspot for retirees due to it being labeled as one of the best places to retire to. Boquete (pronounced Boh-keh-teh) is located in the Chiriqui Highlands about 50 miles northeast of Costa Rica and about 300 miles west of the capital of Panama, Panama City.

This scenic mountain village has an elevation of approximately 3000 – 3700 feet and is nestled on the eastern slopes of the Volcan Barú, Panama's one and only volcano.

Surrounded by national park, tropical rainforests, coffee plantations and beautiful gardens, Boquete is an idyllic paradise in which to live. It is commonly known as “the city of flowers and coffee” and there is an annual festival to celebrate the fertility of the land.

Panama: It Will Never Leave You
The constant warm “spring-like” climate is believed to be the secret of the longevity of life of the locals, many of whom live to be well over a hundred. Days can be as hot as 80ºF, but nights are cool.

Air conditioning is not necessary, neither is heating, unless your property is higher up the mountains. Rain is common in Boquete and other Highland areas, with an annual average of 131 inches. Afternoon drizzle followed by breathtaking rainbows are common sights in Boquete.

The population of Boquete itself is about 5000 and over 500 Americans and Canadians live in the area, either part-time or permanently. The influx of tourists and foreign home-owners has brought new prosperity to the area and many new shops and restaurants have opened. Further facilities, such as medical care, can be found in the town of David, about 25 miles away in the Lowlands. You can still buy land on which to build your own home in the Boquete area, or you can buy an existing village property.

THE FAMOUS PANAMA CANAL, KNOWN AT THE “8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD”....

PANAMA CITY

Bordering with rich rainforest and the famous Panama Canal, known as “The 8th Wonder of the World”, Panama City is a great place to live in or visit.

It is a blend of different cultures, modern America meets Latin America meets Old Spain, and is actually three cities in one. The city is made up of a modern center of businesses, shops, immense skyscrapers and luxury apartments, a 17th Century Spanish Colonial area in the San Felipe district, known as Casco Viejo, and the ruins of Panama Viejo, the old city, which was destroyed in 1671.
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
Enjoy city living in this 21st Century metropolis which offers familiar shops and restaurants, like Liz Claiborne, Nautica, KFC, McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts, and a variety of entertainment. When you tire of city life, you can get away from it all and explore the Parque Metropolitano. This nearby rainforest reserve is on the outskirts of Panama City and is the perfect place to see Titi monkeys, toucans, sloths and parakeets in their natural environment.

Other sites to enjoy include the palm lined Amador Causeway, which connects the mainland to four small islands. It is home to the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research Aquarium, a variety of restaurants, shops and even a yacht club. It is a great place to cycle or jog or to simply take in the views of the incredible Bridge of the Americas.

Of course, a visit to Panama City is not complete without seeing the famous Panama Canal, the 50 mile canal which connects Panama City to the Caribbean town of Colón. Over 12,000 ships use this canal every year and it is fascinating to watch them negotiate the series of locks in the canal, particularly at the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks.

Properties on offer in Panama City include ocean view luxury apartments to suit any budget and older properties in the Casco Viejo district of the city.

BOCAS DEL TORO

This Caribbean archipelago is on the north-western coast of the country and is a chain of islands fringed with palms and with glorious white sandy beaches. The landscape is diverse – rainforests, mountain peaks, beaches and lowlands.

This is the place for you if you dream of enjoying sipping cocktails in a hammock or spending your days diving on unspoiled coral reefs, kayaking or deep sea fishing. Bocas del Toro is a tropical paradise with much to offer the holiday home owner or permanent resident. Isla Colón is the location of the main town of Bocas del Toro and the Bastimentos Marine National Park protects many of the islands.

The archipelago can be reached by ferry, bus, water taxi or by a 40 minute flight from Panama City. It is a popular destination for both retirees and younger expatriates. There is a vast array of real estate on offer, including beach front properties and plantation properties.

LAND OF PEARLS AND PIRATES AND THE STUNNING LOCATION OF THE TV REALITY SHOW, “SURVIVOR”

THE PEARL ISLANDS

Land of pearls and pirates and the stunning location of the TV reality show, “Survivor”, this collection of islands and inlets is found in the Gulf of Panama.

Only a few of the Pearl Islands, or Islas las Perlas, are inhabited. The main island is Contadora which is two hours by ferry, or 15 minutes by plane, from Panama City. These islands were used as hiding places by pirates who would attack the Spanish Armada fleet to steal their precious cargo and are famous for their pearls, particularly the 400 year old pearl, “La Peregrina” owned by actress Elizabeth Taylor.

Stunning beaches of white sands, diverse marine life, including turtles and reef sharks, and luxury resorts and golf courses can be found on Contadora. Treat yourself to a luxury villa or condo and enjoy island life.

PANAMA – THE BIG MOVE

OK, so you're sold! Panama is the place for you to live happily ever after and to live the life of your dreams, but how easy is it to relocate to Panama?

Many people have heard about the New Panama Immigration Law which comes into effect on 27th August 2008, but what does this actually mean for people looking to relocate from North America to Panama?
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
The changes in the law do not adversely affect most people and are simply an effort to modernize legislation and to prevent “undesirables” entering the country. Panama is still looking to welcome foreigners, such as retirees and investors. Changes to the law include the following:

1.Elimination of the Small Investor's Visa – The only investor visa now available is the Large Investor's Visa which is issued to those investing sums of $200,000 or more.

2.Pensionado Program – To benefit through this program, you will need to have a pension of $1000 per month for the main applicant, instead of $500, and $100 for each dependent ($1100 for a couple).

3. Person of Means Visa – The amount has been raised from $200,000 to $350,000 and the CD must be in a local bank, in your own name for a minimum of 4 years. Real estate must be residential, be in your own name and free of liens.

4.Employment Visas – The minimum salary is now $1000 – watch out, the visa is not permanent.
You may find it hard to move to Panama to work, unless you are being relocated by a US or International company, or you are investing in a business. Panamanian salaries tend to be low and employment visas are temporary and have to be renewed. There may be opportunities in the tourist industry or real estate industry for employment, or for entrepreneurs, because these sectors are booming. If you have money to invest in Panama, there are many tax breaks and incentives for investing in tourism.

Panama: It Will Never Leave You
The majority of people relocating to Panama from North America are eligible for the Pensionado Visa. Obtaining the visa is not difficult – no insurmountable pile of red tape to fight your way through. Simply prove to the Panamanian authorities that you have a pension income from a private pension or government agency.

No minimum age is required, just a pension amount of $1000 or over, or $1100 for a couple. To prove your pension, you will need to show the authorities your pension statements and possibly bank statements. The Pensionado Visa does not have an expiry, but you will need to prove your income on an annual basis. The benefits of the Pensionado Program are what draw many people to Panama:

1.A one-off exemption from tax and duties on the importation of household goods, such as furniture, up to a value of $10,000.

2.An exemption from tax on importing a new car every two years.

3.50% discount on hotels Monday to Thursday and 30% at weekends.

4.50% discount on entertainment such as entry to movies, theaters, cultural events and sporting events.

5.25% discount on utility bills.

6.25% discount on restaurant bills.

7.30% discount on public transport and 25% on airline tickets.

8.20% discount on doctor's bills.

9.15% discount on hospital bills.

10.15% discount on loans.

11.15% discount on eye examinations and dentist's bills.

12.10% discount on prescriptions.

HAVEN’T MOVED YET?

I can't believe that you're still not convinced! What's stopping you from living in Paradise?!
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
Many people buy property in Panama every year and have absolutely no regrets. Don't be put off by the dangers associated with some other Latin American countries - Panama is a safe and friendly country which is nothing like neighboring Columbia. It is a first world, 21st Century country which just happens to be located near to some second or third world countries.

NEED MORE REASONS

1.Wildlife – Panama is the perfect getaway or residence of nature enthusiasts and Eco-Tourists. It has 14 national parks, 10 wildlife refuges and many forest reserves offering 220 different species of mammals, 354 amphibians and reptiles, 10,000 different plants, 1000 species of birds and 1500 different trees. Go bird watching in the cloud forests around Volcan Barú in the San Blas wildlife refuge or in the Cerro Azul mountain ranges. Snorkel on the reefs of the San Blas, Kuna people or off the Pacific islands to see the richly diverse marine life.

2.Adventure – Discover Panama's indigenous groups by trekking or traveling in dug-out canoes. Whitewater raft on the River Chagres or swing through the forest canopy of the Valle de Anton by flying on wires thirty feet off the forest floor.

3.The Food – Enjoy wonderfully fresh seafood, fabulous fruit from the outdoor markets and Panamanian patacones, fried patties of plantain – delicious!

4.Wine – South American wine at South American prices!

5. Fireworks and Fiestas – Like other Latin American countries and Spain, Panamanians love to party. Fiestas are held on Saints' days and Panama City Carnival is held on the four days leading up to Ash Wednesday.

Las Balserias, an Indian fiesta, is held in the Chiriqui valley in February and is celebrated by men tossing balsa logs at each other and feasting on regional food. Fireworks seem to be a part of every fiesta and are a common sight in the skies above Panama city.

6.The People – Panamanians are warm and friendly and love to make friends with foreigners.
Panama: It Will Never Leave You
Living in Panama will allow you to live a quality life at a fraction of the cost of your old life. Whether you are a snowbird or you are looking to relocate, Panama can offer you that glimpse of heavenly paradise normally only enjoyed by the rich and famous.

The bathroom was about as simple as they come. After touring numerous new condo buildings in Punta Pacifica and seeing ultra-luxurious floor plans of bathrooms with saunas, Jacuzzis, and swimming pools in Gorgona, this opened up my eyes a bit. The boarded-up roof, deep hole in the ground and stabilization railing had reduced going to bathroom to its basics. Why do you need a plasma when you can watch little green geckos chase each other on the wall? When I came out and prepared to continue my trip, I noticed my car had grown a flat tire. Finding uncontaminated land in Panama is easier than in many other regions of the world. Like Guyana, Dominica, Costa Rica and many other developing countries, pesticides and chemical fertilizers have not been widely used, simply because of the cost.
