A UNIQUELY ANGUILLA EXPERIENCE
by Merlyn H. Rogers

There are some places that almost seem to beckon to us, call us by name inviting us to unravel their secrets or hidden attributes, to experience for ourselves their allure, to revel in the sheer simplistic pleasures of living, to experience their magic and declare them our own. This is what Anguilla does with a type of quiet charm that is uniquely Anguillian; and at its core, the warmth of its people. This is an island that can best be likened to a raw canvass; to each of us who call it home and to those who visit time and time again, we know that we must throw our own paint and create our own paintings; hence it cannot be all things to all people, by it's very nature then, the island lends itself to a type of informal living with an understated elegance, the type of place that makes you fall in love not only with the island, but with life and living. It is an island that seems to create its own blueprint culminating in the total "Anguilla Experience."

ANGUILLA IS A TRULY MULTI-FACETED RARE GEM.

With all of this positive vibe of island authenticity, and having the famed "it" factor, there are many who still struggle to pronounce the island's name on hearing it for the first time; then there are those who, by virtue of their many visits, earn bragging rights to pronouncing it correctly. Whatever the situation, one thing is clear, Anguilla has come of age and as Dr. Hon. Sir Kennedy Simmons aptly declared; "the Anguilla I now see has risen from the desert of neglect to become one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the world." But what makes this island outpost, tucked away in the Northern most tip of the Caribbean necklace of islands, one of the rarest gems? For those of us who know no other type of living, we guard our life here jealously, not really seeking to share such a lovely experience. And most of those who have discovered the wonders of Anguilla try hard not to share it with others as well, choosing to keep it for themselves. Anguilla is a truly multi-faceted rare gem, shared and not shared, seen by some and unseen by many, spoken of and yet kept by many as a closely guarded secret.

Life however, has a way of happening and with time, change is inevitable and so it has become increasingly, if not impossible to stay quiet about what makes Anguilla truly unique. We on Anguilla celebrate passionately the things we have and the things we do not have: there are no casinos, no open markets, no screaming billboards with packages, no "facey" commodities, and we do not complain. "Even more revealing of Anguilla's smart resistance to the downsides of island tourism is the absence of big cruise liners" noted one investor. Jet skis, which largely contribute to noise pollution and pose huge potential to endanger the lives of beach lovers are banned from the island. However, what what the island boasts of culminates in a unique and divine experience for residents and visitors alike:

the fierce sharing of a proud and rich history...

Our passion for the sea is boundless, starting with the island's nautical traditions and the reliance on the sea made boat racing Anguilla's national sport and year round pastime. Sir Emile Gumbs (former Chief Minister of Anguilla) captures this unique aspect of Anguillian culture when he wrote, "our largely arid and unproductive land dictated that we go down to the sea and earn a living. We built and sailed schooners, sloops and fishing boats. Every time two vessels met , a race ensued....we had the sea in our blood, and boat racing ingrained in all of us;" and so today this unbridle passion for the sea and boatracing continues. This is the legacy of a resilient people; Anguillian men who journeyed to and from the canefields of the Dominican Republic, and the women too who stayed on the island when Anguilla did not have the means for sustenance of its people.

the indomitable spirit of its people...

Despite all of the attention on the luxurious hotels and offerings today, Anguilla's greatest asset still remains it's people....Anguillians by nature are warm, genuine and friendly; it is this that epitomizes the spirit of the Anguillian way of life and to which repeat visitors to these shores say keep them returning. In fact, Malachy Duffy (travel writer for Town & Country Winter 2005), captured this by stating "adding to the island's wealth were the Anguillians themselves. Everywhere we went, people asked how we liked it there and if were having a good time...we felt that we belonged"

bountiful beaches and underwater gardens...

THE WATER LOOKED LIKE THE PALETTE OF AN ARTIST EXPERIMENT WITH VARIATIONS OF BLUE: FAR OUT, THE SEAS WAS A DEEP PURPLE...

Anguilla is a special place in the Caribbean. While many destinations are known for their abundance in flora and fauna, Anguilla has been blessed with coveted features; unbelievable pristine, soft, powder white beaches and a cadancing array of pellucid shades of turquoise waters. "The water looked like the palette of an artist experiment with variations of blue: far out, the sea was a deep royal; closer to shore, it flowed from electric to turquoise to aquamarine. The sand was powdery and shaded by palm trees. We had discovered Anguilla's treasure: thirty-three fantastic beaches, large and small," mused Duffy, writer for Town & Country 2005.

The island's 68-km coastline boasts 33 beaches many of them ranked among the best in the region and the world. The rhythm of the beaches slows time and set the day's agenda; there is one to match every rhythm and mood. Some are secluded and extremely quiet, while others are a tiny bit busier, some create the canvas for gentle strolls, and others are ideal coves for snorkeling, or private rendezvous.

With little or no strong underwater currents diving is ideal for beginners. A unique marine structure comprises two systems- an inside reef and an outside reef. Shallow dives begin at 35feet, the underwater presents breathtaking soft corals, sea fans, and an underwater museum featuring "El Buen Consejo", a Spanish Galleon wreck deliberately sunk to create our deepest site at 120feet. Anguilla, quite naturally has truly earned The Travel Channel's ranking of "number one world's best all around beaches."

the delectable food; the ultimate culinary experience...

Cuisine is fast becoming a central feature of the Anguillian experience, this tiny island is home to a wide variety of gastronomic diversions with more than 80 dining experiences...ranging from international to local beach grills the food is par excellence! The true flavor of this laid back island outpost is served up island wide at 5 star restaurants, cafes, beach joints, inns, and at the top resorts, where internationally-acclaimed chefs from every corner of the globe create epicurean fantasies while cooking up an eclectic mix of international and island style cuisine. With wine cellars that rival some of the finest, and reggae beach bars that serve Perrier Jouet by the glass, island dining has been elevated to new levels.

The culinary scene on the island too is made even more interesting with the presence of hands-on cooking classes in demo kitchens and a one of its kind Hydroponic farm at Cuisinart Resort & Spa. Fresh is redefined here in the world's first resort-based hydroponic farm, where vines literally float in water and required nutrients yield some of the most succulent vegetables, edible flowers and herbs all fresh and organically grown. Anguilla's restaurants have visitors lauding the island as one of the Caribbean's top culinary destinations. Food critics contend that the island's most delectable cuisine are the finger-licking dishes cooked up by local chefs and served roadside, and the small beachside stands all over the island.

health and wellness...

The island lends its inherent allure to the simplistic beauty and in a way awakens the senses to be revived, relaxed and renewed. Far from the madden crowds and pressures of modern, fast paced living the island spas, health and wellness professionals (whether in spa on the go services or in 19,000 square-foot over-the-top oceanfront spa facilities) there is this ultimate goal of rebalancing, replenishing, revitalizing not only the body, but the mind. Services are wide ranging from simple massage therapies, body polishing, bathing rituals, to an exclusively designed pool for Thalasso treatments (heated nutrients and mineral-rich salt water favoured for its healing properties.)

a plethora of accommodations...

THE ISLAND IS UNDOUBEDLY CONTINUING ITS QUEST FOR ATTRACTING THE WORLD'S BEST...

Accommodations standards are high, diverse and distinctive ranging from the ultra luxurious Resorts and Villas to the delightful small properties known as "Charming Escapes". In fact, the island boasts three of the region's top ten hotels, two of the regions most comprehensive wine cellars and has received accolades from travelers and awards from discriminating travel editors around the world. The island is undoubtedly continuing its quest for attracting the world's best; two more opulent properties are on the horizon to open during the upcoming 2008/2009 season.

art and bold architecture...

There are no remnants of old sugar mills or grandeur great houses. In fact, there are no modern high rise buildings at all as they would not feel right nor fit in on Anguilla. The topography of the island is flat with its highest point at a mere 213 feet above sea level. The island's bold archictecture takes inspiration from far flung places Morocco, the Greek Isles, Mediterranean nuances and modern futuristic angles the likes which appear in architectural digest, all yielding, blending and coming to an almost perfect balance with the shrub-like landscape of the island. Local old world Anguillian architecture holds its rightful space and place within what is an otherwise modern architectural digest type landscape.

Anguilla, too, is a haven for artist and art lovers; studios and art galleries abound on the island, local artisans share a commitment in bringing fine art and craft to life with the highest quality. Nature's overwhelming gifts of translucent light and vivid colours have captured the imagination of a growing number of local and international artists all claiming Anguilla as their private haven of unabated inspiration. The small galleries scattered across the island all showcase provocative art and craft, sculptures from exotic woods and masterpieces created from driftwood.

it is the magic of the island for romanticism...

There is something magical in the rainbows and sunsets here which provide a natural backdrop for picture postcard weddings, it is little wonder then that Anguilla can boast the rights to being the first island destination to have hosted NBC's "Today Throws a Wedding" series, and Modern Bride declared it as "one of the world's best honeymoon destinations"

the appeal for meetings & incentive business...

Anguilla has the ability to cater to the needs of the small meetings industry, and its idyllic backdrop serves as a perfect vehicle to those seeking to create incentives for the well deserving.

one of a kind festivals...

Festivals are quietly and confidently playing an important role in diversifying the island's offerings; Festival Del Mar a community-based festival scheduled for Easter Weekend celebrating and highlighting the importance of the fishing industry.) Moonsplash in March is a festival held under the full moon while enjoying the ultimate in Caribbean Reggae. Anguilla Yacht Regatta in May features three days of invigorating races with internationally recognized crews on world class yachts and is surely sailing in a whole new light.

Biennial, Anguilla International Arts Festival is a celebration of the mystique and charm of Anguilla's landscape and the inspiration of its natural beauty.
Summer Festival is a must on the calendar of events held every end of July to early August as it is 10 days of fete fun and culture exciting traditional boatracing by day, and spectacular carnival events by night.

Tranquility Jazz Festival is held annually in November with a tagline which says it all, "straight no chaser" reflecting that this is truly becoming one of the most authentic jazz festivals in the Caribbean. The Jazz Festival features three days of pure sweet jazz at locations on the island that will leave you as breathless as the sweet sounds of the music.

And last...It is simply the allure of the island as the ultimate get away. In fact, the New York Times travel section (Dec 2007) included Anguilla as one of 53 destinations to visit for 2008!

Like everywhere else, Anguilla too has its share of developmental issues and facing the daunting challenge of finding a balance to prevent over development. Despite this, however, Sir Emile Gumbs unabashedly proclaims, "I am proud to be a patriotic Anguillian and there is no other place on earth I would rather be." We in Anguilla agree...it epitomizes what every home should be - simply inviting, intriguing and incomparable!
