TURKS & CAICOS: AN ELITE ISLAND GROUP
By Ralph Higgs, Director of Tourism - Marketing
Turks & Caicos Tourist Board

The Turks & Caicos Islands in the Caribbean have long been known for its inherent natural beauty and rich diversity.

Consisting of 40 different islands and cays, only eight of which are inhabited, the islands offer picturesque tranquility, favorable climate, luxurious beaches and unique underwater adventures to all who grace its shores.

However, in the past few years, Turks & Caicos has phenomenally skyrocketed into the luxury travel space, as one of the most popular destinations for honeymooners, affluent jet-setters and celebrities to bunker down in for rest and relaxation.

Notables such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christie Brinkley, Donna Karen and Bruce Willis who have all invested time and interest in the Turks & Caicos – are not only drawn to the destination for its high-end resort offerings, but for the luxury real estate and sense of seclusion.

According to the International Luxury Travel Market in Cannes, countries around the world are witnessing growth at 10 to 20 percent each year in the luxury travel market, proving this to be one of the best performing business sectors in the years to come.

The Turks & Caicos economy is heavily based on tourism, with the Islands welcoming more than 200,000 visitors each year. And due to the boom in luxury travel, this number is expected to grow substantially in the coming years.

GRACE BAY BEACH CONSECUTIVELY VOTED 'BEST BEACH IN THE WORLD' BY THE WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS IN 2005, 2006 AND 2007.

With the influx of visitors to this upscale destination, a heavy demand has been created for increased development and investment opportunities on Providenciales and the outer islands of Dellis Cay, North and West Caicos, in order to preserve the island’s natural serenity.

Grace Bay Villa

Providenciales, or commonly known as “Provo,” is the most developed island and home to Grace Bay Beach, consecutively voted “Best Beach in the World” by the World Travel Awards in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Provo lies just within the Atlantic Ocean, beside the Caribbean Sea. Offering some of the most desirable snorkeling conditions in the world, nature aficionados, diving enthusiasts and even passive beach purveyors can all relish in the harmonious beauty Provo has to offer. The popularity of Providenciales has led to the introduction of a many new luxury properties during the past few years, a few of which can be described as following:

Turks and Caicos The Amanyara Hotel (an Aman resort) opened in March 2006 on the North point of Providenciales. Amanyara (meaning “peaceful place”) resides on the tip of a 2,025 hectare nature and wildlife reserve, with the widely - acclaimed reefs of the Northwest Point Marine Park just offshore.
The hotel’s structure holds low rooflines that converge with the natural surroundings, embracing a series of ponds and an oceanfront setting that includes low, rocky headlands and a sweeping white sand beach. Forty wooden pavilions and private villas comprise Amanyara, with the design of each adapted to its pond, ocean or beach surroundings. Other unique features the resort offers include an in-house recording studio for visiting musicians, a library, a screening room, a boutique, a dive center, a sun deck and infinity pools.

Amanyara

Amanyara continues to be ranked as one of the world’s top hotels, resorts and spas by Zagat Survey, bringing a wealth of affluent travelers seeking a tranquil haven to its doors. Rates for The Amanyara begin at $1,350 a night.
Turks and Caicos Located on 4.6 beachfront acres of magnificent Grace Bay Beach, The Somerset on Grace Bay has intrigued affluent travelers ever since its introduction to the island in June of 2006. Visitors have already taken advantage in a variety of investment opportunities on Turks & Caicos Islands, including the 54-suite residence properties available for purchase at The Somerset.
One- to four-bedroom condominiums ranging from $1 to $4 million dollars are available for purchase, all featuring innovations new to the current accommodations in Provo such as Somerset Extreme Croquet, a beach variation of the croquet game; “whimsical” tea parties; and Sandcastle University seminars taught by Mark Mason, the Guinness world record holder in sandcastle building. Other amenities include infinity pools with underwater sound systems, star gazing towers, private outdoor hot tubs, plasma TVs and in-room X-Boxes.
All condominiums feature full kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms and wrap-around terraces. Rooms begin at $500 per night during the low season for a one-bedroom English cottage, and go up to $5,000 per night for a four-bedroom estate penthouse during peak season.
Turks and Caicos Quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations for Caribbean cruises, Turks and Caicos officially unveiled its Grand Turk Cruise Center on “Cruise Day” in May 2006.
The Cruise Center is a one-of-a-kind terminal with direct beachfront access, convenient changing rooms, showers and lockers, covered beach chairs, private cabana day rentals, and massage services. Visitors to the Grand Turk Cruise Center can participate in a variety of activities including Sea Trekkin’s Underwater Tour, snuba (a combination of scuba and snorkeling), kayaking, and the Grand Turk Horseback Ride N’ Swim.
Turks and Caicos Proudly bringing a family atmosphere to its property, the Grace Bay Club opened a new chapter in its book in February 2006, with the unveiling of 38 ultra-spacious, family-friendly Villas separate from its adults-only hotel.
The Villas at the Grace Bay Club represent a $45 million expansion of the property and start at $455 a night. Amenities such as Kid’s Town with miniature golf, an on-the-beach pool, and eco-activity programs round out a few of the newest features at The Villas.
Adults also have the opportunity to lounge at the poolside grill, enter a unique haven inside the 5,000 square-foot Anani Spa & Fitness Center, or soak up the sun in the property’s unique open-air lounge.

"I sat in the shade at the Pine Cay airport arrival tiki hut, listening to the rustle of the palmtop thatch and gazing at the turquoise sea…realizing again that this island is very special. Pine Cay is not a busy place. Memberships are strictly limited and the casually elegant hotel by the sea has only 12 rooms. On average, less than one hundred people are generally on the island. Peaceful… calm… quiet...- an amazing retreat from our hectic lives.

This tranquil 800 acre oasis lies among the Turks & Caicos Islands, an isolated jewel with a serene natural environment preserved by the island owners for their private appreciation. “TCI” as it is locally known, is a convenient direct flight away from Miami, New York, Charlotte, Toronto, Boston and Montreal, with comfortable overseas connections from Europe. The language is English and the currency US dollars – an easy destination to choose and a splendid destination to explore.

The wind blows clean and smooth over my skin, fresh in my nose. At the marina on the eastern edge of the island protected channel offers sanctuary to the owners boats…all shapes and sizes from imposing deep sea fishing yachts to bright kayaks grace the rustic docks. Along the north shore the powder sand beckons you to long walks and gentle swims in the sparkling ocean. Bicycle the narrow unpaved roadways for miles, twisting through the island from coast to coast. Perch at the bar for the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever tasted….and enjoy the variety of company a little island can host!

Joining a private island community is a rather lengthy and complex process as all parties must be sure of compatibility. It is of paramount importance that the personalities of the members converge to share the island lifestyle. Since 1970, when the first owners braved the lack of electricity and built simple cottages, Pine Cay has retained its pristine natural beauty- despite the modern conveniences of telephone, hot water and internet. The charm of the island is in the careful simplicity the members create and continue to respect."

There is also a tennis court lit for night play, plus the spectacular Provo Golf Club’s 18-hole championship course and driving range is only five minutes away.
Guests also enjoy a variety of surfside activity choices including kayaks, snorkeling, and Hobie Cats. Rates range in price from $300 per night to $5,000 per night.
Turks and Caicos The Tuscany opened in December 2006 and has already garnered a wealth of interest in investment on the properties. Accommodations include villa suites distinctly different in décor and ambiance that provide guests with comfort, luxury and outstanding views overlooking beautiful Grace Bay Beach. Luxury suites are available for purchase starting at $950,000. Amenities for the resort and residences include an outdoor European swimming pool, personal shoppers and chefs, lighted tennis courts, a gym, and concierge services to book a variety of off-site recreation options.
Additionally, visitors are only steps away from the Provo Golf Course, considered one of the best in the Caribbean. Flamingos and egrets populate the lakes while white painted conch shells mark the tees. Rates range in price from $975 per night to $1,300.
Providenciales

Provo is by far the most developed island in Turks & Caicos, and has been influential in increasing the country’s GDP, with continued developments leading to an even further expected increase. As such, the local government has made efforts to not only continue building upon Provo’s success, but to spread the focus across other, previously lower-inhabited islands such as North Caicos, West Caicos, Dellis Cay and Grand Turk, in hopes of keeping the sense of seclusion found while visiting the islands.

In 2008, Provo is excited to host the following new resort openings:

Turks and Caicos Leeward Resort & Marina, opening in March 2008, will for the first time in the Turks & Caicos offer a $400 million international motor yacht destination. Private docking facilities, residences and ownership opportunities will be offered in a comprehensive, active resort – ensuring a new standard for luxurious Caribbean waterfront living. Additional amenities include a deep water eco-marina, a secluded white sandy beach, swimming pools and hydra-spas, a fitness center, retail shops and boutiques, outdoor cafés and bars, access to the private Turks & Caicos Yacht Club at penthouse level and Leeward Marina Deep Water Boat Slips at 65-200 feet.

Leeward residential properties include Marina Club condominiums, Yacht Club residences, studios, one- and two-bedroom homes, Leeward Isles, canal-front homes and lot packages. The Leeward Marina is designed to protect and preserve the pristine waters in which it sets.
The world-class marina, which has dock space for up to 50 yachts, welcomes cruisers and mega-yachts up to 200 feet. Twenty-four hour entry direct to deep water docks, on-site Customs and Immigration Services office, and a VIP lounge for crews is also available. All guests of the Marina will have access to the brand new Nikki Beach Resort and Spa, including its five-star amenities and services designed specifically for honeymooners and adults.
Turks and Caicos Seven Stars Resort on Grace Bay, opening July 2008, will be an exclusive property located on the finest part of 12-mile-long Grace Bay Beach. Seven Stars offers a signature oceanfront swimming pool, a tropical island-style restaurant on-site, a secured gate house and a handsome clubhouse with a business center, game room and owners’ lounge.
The true distinction of Seven Stars from other oceanfront properties appears in its extraordinary two-, three-, and four-bedroom accommodations. Spacious quarters with luxurious appointments, including generous balconies and marble floors comprise quarters.

Turks and Caicos delights in continuing its leadership in the luxury travel market with the increased presence of resort and private residence properties along the outer islands. As upscale travel demands continue to grow among affluent jet-setters, the Turks & Caicos will be dedicated to upholding the highest set of standards and offerings, while at the same time keeping the pristine serenity and sense of seclusion that first such presence to the beautiful islands in the Caribbean.
