A SECRET LIFESTYLE ON ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES, Part 1
By Celia Hill
Little is known about the small island paradises known as of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and frankly most of its island residents are very happy to remain off the radar. We consider our magnificent islands are secrets that we jealousy guard.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines are an island chain situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, north of Trinidad and Tobago. They form part of the Windward Islands, which also include St. Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, and Martinique. The island of St. Vincent has an area of 344 square kilometres (133 square miles) and its 32 dependent islands and cays in the Grenadine island chain have a total area of 45 square kilometres (17 square miles). St. Vincent is approximately twice the size of Washington, D.C., and has a coastline of 84 kilometres (52 miles).
Writing about the unique little rock known as St. Vincent is easy as it has so much going for it. For one, it is a place where you are known by your name and not by number. In all my years in the Caribbean, and I’ve travelled extensively, I find it to be one of the most laid back, easy going, friendly, safe, clean, beautiful places I have ever visited and am thrilled to live there. I may be biased but I have traveled extensively and I’m always glad to return.
I’m so happy to live here I built up a thriving hotel business which certainly keeps me busy. I vividly remember one couple who booked a room at my hotel. Upon arrival, they mentioned that one they were looking for land to purchase so they could retire here. I, of course showed them what lands I had available and they immediately purchased a lot. In speaking with them, I was curious to find out why they chose our jewel of an island and how they had heard of it.
They proceeded to tell me, they had taken a year off work to travel the world in search of a place to retire. They had visited all of Europe, India, Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and the list goes on. They relayed so many wonderful and many not so wonderful experiences they had, but could not find the place they wanted to call home. They enjoyed their travels immensely, and on their way back via New York, they met a friend there who asked them if they had ever heard of a place call St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
They immediately purchased a ticket and made a detour here… need I say more. I am not alone in thinking it is a great place to retire, there are very may people who can vouch for that, although as noted we resident’s try to keep it as the world’s best kept secret.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines consists of the main island of St. Vincent, plus a 32 island chain known as the Grenadines, which span from St. Vincent to Carriacou. Incidentally, Carriacou belongs to the nation of Grenada.

NICARAGUA
6,208 ACRES for JUST $1.2 MILLION
Including:
7,500 metres of unbroken Caribbean beachfront and over 6000 acres of natural undisturbed wildlife habitat, much of which is bounded by lagoon waters.
The pale sand Caribbean beach contrasts with the green of the vegetation which reaches miles back to the lagoon. In this part of the lagoon are some of the best fishing grounds in the whole lagoon region. The place has a calm and peacefulness that is hard to find anywhere these days. The possibilities are endless, a retirement community with golf course, a holiday resort with its own shopping mall, casino and airstrip, an eco reserve with sympathetic lodges and cottages buried amongst the natural habitat, a private community of homes and shops... Nicaragua is only a 2.5 hour flight direct from Miami, so it becomes more than an endless possibility.
It could be a reality...

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been known to yachter’s and scuba divers for a great many years, and has been the recipient of many awards for best sailing, diving, fishing and secluded beaches, in the world.
The rich and famous have been coming to our islands for years, as it is their regular stomping ground. Along with immersing themselves in our unspoiled natural beauty, absolutely no one bothers them here. You could understand why they would like to keep it that way, hence the reason it is not over run by tourist.
Another semi-best kept secret is that part of the first feature film of the Pirates of the Caribbean series was filmed here. Can you imagine such a block buster movie being filmed here and yet still St. Vincent escaped the hoards of visitors to the island by keeping this information very low key - with a simple mention on the bottom at the end which most people would not stay in the theater to read. Did you also know about the Donald Trump Golf course on Canouan (one of the islands in the chain of 32.) Yeah, The Donald found us, but we are still trying to maintain our low-key status.
The islands are very lush and mountainous, giving in to the natural beauty of fertile valleys and many coves along the coast line, it is what the perfect image of what a topical island should be. It is one of the very few islands left that remain almost in its natural state. The main island is volcanic, with an active volcano La Soufriere, which erupts every one hundred years, last erupting in 1979. So we are safe from another eruption for a very long time.
There is much to do and visit on any of our islands as we possess natural waterfalls, caves, tunnels dug manually through solid rock by the Caribs, and we have the oldest botanical gardens in the Caribbean. There is also the Montreal Gardens situated in the mountains which are a must see, as well as non-stop sailing, snorkeling, hiking, (a visit to the rain forest is a must), scuba diving, day trips to the Grenadines.
A visit to Bequia and to the Tobago Cayes is more than worth the effort as it is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. Now, a protected area it is maintained and monitored by the French government.
Part 2 of this article will continue in the next issue. |

One of the best-selling artists of all time with more than 30 million records and 100 million singles sold, Rihanna has signed a multi-year deal with The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) to exclusively promote her hometown island of Barbados as a tourist destination. The three-year partnership officially kicks off in Bridgetown, Barbados on August 5, 2011 with a full-length concert of her current "Loud" tour produced by the BTA and Roc Nation.
"Barbados is a place like no other and one of the reasons for this is the spirit and national pride of our people," said Rihanna. "I want each and every visitor to this beautiful island to experience what makes this destination different from all others and that is the spirit and warmth of my fellow Barbadians."
As an ambassador for the island of Barbados, over the next three years, Rihanna will exclusively promote the destination through advertising campaigns, promotional appearances and via her social media presence. In addition to her concert in Barbados this summer, Rihanna will promote travel to the island from Brazil during her appearance on tour in September.

Richard L. Sealy. "She is a great source of national pride to Barbados and we are thrilled to enter into this formal partnership to promote Barbados as a leading tourist destination."

| The most valued and sought after economic product in the Caribbean is its tourism market – tourism is not merely the region’s largest employer, bringing in the highest revenue and tax-related income to island governments, but it is the life blood of the majority of island nation and their people. Although the Caribbean as a whole experienced an extremely difficult tourism year in 2009, the picture began to improve somewhat in early 2010; this did not mean that tourist arrivals began to grow in leaps and bounds, but rather that the pace of annual decline began to slow. Read more in the state of the Caribbean report. The only place on the earth that meets the needs of the wide cross-section of individuals with discriminating taste and seekers of the highest quality of life on a consciously conservative budget is the fantastic Caribbean, and undoubtedly, the one Caribbean island that has always been in the global eye is Jamaica : Fantastic Culture, First Class Opportunity…read all about it in part one. ---> Read More |

| In the first article of this series, the writer, fed up with negative air travel experiences, takes on a Caribbean regional airline juggernaut in an open letter critique. As he makes his case, describing his latest chaotic air journey he also offers insightful solutions and recommendations for improvement….and now hopes that the travel giant will really listen and respond to the ‘little guy.’ Obviously, changes in the region’s air travel situation are sorely needed but change can certainly take awhile to achieve. Often the first step is the process is just listening to your customers, taking their problems to heart and doing something constructive about it, one step at a time. ---> Read More |
