CARIBBEAN SPIRIT : CREATING HABITAT BELIZE
by Reverend Macarena Rose

hab - i - tat   (a noun)
Sociological definition from the dictionary:  the place where a person or thing is most likely to be found.

In other words… HOME.  A very powerful word that brings a lot to mind, doesn't it?  It's a powerful concept and evokes many memories and feelings for each and every one of us....

We all need a home…. that's for sure.  No one has to explain this to us.  It’s been basic to our existence as humans on earth since the beginning.  Overhanging trees, caves, whatever our ancestors could find - they made good use of local options to shelter and protect their young.  Home is a place in which to center our lives. That hasn't changed. It never will.

HOME ….IT’S WHERE OUR HEART IS, WHERE OUR LOVED ONES RESIDE WITH US. A HOME IS A PLACE OF NURTURING.

The size and style of housing have varied through the ages according to status and natural materials available - but the concept of "home" has never varied. Home…It's where our heart is, where our loved ones reside with us.  A home is a place of nurturing.

Our requirement for shelter is so basic to our nature, we work hard to get a home and maintain it.  We're proud to provide one for our family. In it, we raise our children and share family life. We all "get it" - no explanations required.

We've been extremely fortunate in the United States, Canada and Europe to enjoy a standard of living that has, for a long time, given us access to home ownership.  Homes have been affordable.  Now we're all caught in economic circumstances in a down-turned economy that make it harder and harder to maintain our standard of living - and home.

In the USA alone, millions of families have lost their home in the disastrous process of foreclosure.  It seems un-American to me to throw families, children, and animals out of their homes on a large scale basis -- as the economy tanks. But that is what's happening.  You won't read much about it in the media, of course.  No huge headlines there.  One wonders why not.

Because the banks are merciless and foreclosures are up dramatically and expected to keep climbing.  It's very unsettling.  After all, the USA in particular has been a country that has been about the cherishing of hearth and home and the rights of private ownership.  But sorry folks, that is no longer the case in the USA. I suspect the lack of intense media coverage is strongly influenced by the government - for obvious reasons. The whole thing strikes to our core.  And, it is now hitting much too close to "home.”  Having large numbers of Americans evicted from their homes onto the street - or unable to pay their mortgage because their job disappeared or salary has decreased - is greatly disturbing.

BELIZE IS NOT ONLY A LOVELY COUNTRY; IT IS ALSO A VERY DO-ABLE PARADISE FOR EXPATS.

That's why expats in Belize are very fortunate indeed. We've lucked out. Belize is not only a lovely country, but is a very do-able paradise for Expats.  Desirable land and housing are readily affordable. Trust me, your Yankee dollars go a long way here and provide comfortable housing and a very pleasant lifestyle.

Panama - Own a Tropical Waterfront Resort Home for Only $25,000 Down!

A $25,000 down payment will allow you to reserve the Caribbean oceanfront vacation home of your dreams. Laguna Reef Resort is located in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Costa Rica and Panama.Vista Paraiso - Panama This secluded Caribbean resort sits on the northwest coast of Isla Bastimentos, a lush tropical island in the Archipelago Bocas del Toro.

Make Laguna Reef Resort your home base to explore the unspoiled tropical beaches, protected forest and tropical marine preserve that surround the resort; it’s also home to exotic birds, colorful fish and rain forest butterflies, to name but a few of your new neighbors. Most important, it’s your home away from home, a place where you can wash away the everyday. And proof positive that where you go isn’t nearly as important as where you stay.
What a true blessing and exciting prospect for all who are knocked down by the bad economy.  If you are considering expat alternatives, then you know where to come.  Here is where you can regain your financial footing.  Here is a place where you will be welcomed with open arms (in English, of course, the official language) and made to feel most welcome.  You can end your financial anxieties and turn your life around in Belize.  You can live as you have in the recent past - without constant financial struggle.

Who says you can't turn back time!  To an era when the income you earned provided the housing and lifestyle you wanted!  Fast forward to TODAY - and you can still enjoy that same lifestyle in Belize!!  And, on the SAME amount of money you earned then!

It's a great feeling to no longer be subject to the economic hardships imposed by today's economy.  Instead of being downtrodden and depressed, you'll be stepping up and dancing a lively jig in exultation!  Here in Belize, you can regain your peace of mind and return to financial stability.  What you've worked so hard for over the years in the U.S. may no longer be adequate THERE - oh, but it will do so much for you HERE!!   And let you feel the pride of providing well for your family once again.

HABITAT BELIZE

For those of you who are familiar with my writings about Belize, you know how strongly I feel about living here. This is a land of great warmth -- not just in climate but in relationships also.  Belizean culture celebrates family, friends and the inter-connectedness of communities.  And it's not just talk.  It's not some abstract thought. People here live it and reach out and help one another. (Just like people used to in the "good old days" in the U.S.)

And because my business here  www.RainofrestRealty.net deals with helping expats find the home of their dreams -- it has seemed very natural to me to reach out to this wonderful community of San Ignacio in which I live and help make a dream come true for one of our Belizean neighbors. What could be more appropriate than a HOME!

Some of you have been surprised that other expats and myself have felt so motivated to involve ourselves in our local community.  Ah, but we all feel so grateful to have found this special place on earth to call HOME and we are most appreciative of our life here as expats.   We feel very determined indeed to give back to these good people who are our friends and neighbors.

This is the background for how HABITAT BELIZE came about.  Just like Habitat for Humanity in the United States, HABITAT BELIZE has the goal of providing affordable housing.

You can see why this project really resonates with me.  It seems the most natural thing in the world. Affordable real estate for expats is what my company and I are about.  And affordable housing for Belizeans is what HABITAT BELIZE is all about.

It is a pleasure to introduce you to the first family in Belize chosen to have a home.  They are very special.  This couple with three children is all about giving to others and living their faith.  What income they've had has gone to feed, educate their children and continue their mission work. Theirs is a strong spirit of service to others. I greatly admire this couple because of their incredibly generous attitude toward life.

For that reason, we at HABITAT BELIZE are committed to building a suitable dwelling in which this family can continue raising their children and enjoying family life.  Locals in Belize and expats from the U.S., Mexico and Canada have all joined in to help HABITAT BELIZE's mission become a reality and a dream come true for the family of five.

Habitat Belize has just broken ground for this first home in Belize!  It's a great feeling to get started. If you would like to share this good feeling, please join us in this labor of love, you are more than welcome.   Any size donation would truly be of help- also needed are supplies and labor. Currently Habitat Belize has people flying in from St. Petersburg, Florida, and Canada to help see this project to fruition.

Come join us!  Here's something positive we can do to help people out.   Let's all help this kind family of ten move out of their 300 square foot domain and into their own home!

People ask why we choose this family first- and the reason is that three of the children and their mother are all legally blind. The Father works very hard to support his family, and they live their lives in complete gratitude for all.
HABITAT BELIZE, the family and I thank you with all our heart and truly appreciate your contributions, good thoughts, and good wishes!
